Overview

Photo The Bull Inn In the heart of rural Norfolk, this charming traditional coaching inn dates back to the 17th century, with parts dating back to the 14th century, making it the second oldest inn in Norfolk.

The Bull Inn is located off the A1045 - Swaffham to Fakenham road, and was once the first or last change of horses on the old Kings Lynn to Great Yarmouth coaching route. Today, the inn has 10 recently refurbished en suite rooms, with 3 disabled-friendly rooms on the ground floor. The inn still retains many beautiful original features, including exposed wooden beams. The building’s original timber frame can be clearly seen in the restaurant and the rooms above.

As well as the restaurant, the inn has a charming traditional bar, with a selection of real ales served all year round. The bar is also open to the public and is popular with local people as well as with hotel guests.

Hotel information

The inn’s main building dates from the 17th century and has one of the few remaining original King Charles I fireplaces. There are 2 rooms in this building, one being a split-level family room. The structure’s original timber frame can still be seen in this part of the building.

The other rooms are in the 18th and 19th century part of the building. The old stables and coach house have now been converted into 3 double rooms, which are disabled friendly and have large shower rooms. The old hayloft has been converted into a family room.

The Bull was also once the site for the local court. The old courtroom has also recently been refurbished and the original fireplace has been restored to working order.

Thanks to the building’s rich history, much of the refurbishment and restoration has been accomplished with the help of a grant from the East of England Tourist Board.

Food & beverage

A full English breakfast is included in the price. Breakfast is available in the recently refurbished old courtroom.

The public bar and the cosy restaurant have also been restored recently. Both the bar and the restaurant boast original wooden beams and attractive period features including original inglenook fireplaces.

In the bar, the bar top is of Welsh slate, as are 4 half-moon tables, which were originally 2 cutting tables from the famous royal tailors, Gieves & Hawkes at 1 Saville Row, London.

Room information

There are 7 double and twin rooms, all of which are en suite. 3 of these rooms are situated on the ground floor and are suitable for disabled guests, wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility. These rooms have showers only. Dogs can also be accommodated in the ground-floor rooms. 5 of the double and twin rooms have enough room to accommodate an extra bed.

There are also 2 family rooms.

One of the family rooms is situated in the oldest part of the building. This room is split-level and has 3 single beds and one double bed. A cot can also be provided.

The other family room is in the old hayloft and can sleep up to 6. This room has a bath and shower and a separate sitting area.

Area information

The Bull Inn is in the Norfolk village of Litcham, which is in north-west Norfolk, 17 miles (27 km) from Kings Lynn, 7 miles (11.25 km) from Swaffham and Dereham and 10 miles (16 km) from Fakenham.

The inn lies in the heart of the region made famous by the TV programme Kingdom. This ITV series stars Stephen Fry as Peter Kingdom, a Norfolk-based solicitor whose offices are in Swaffham.

The North Norfolk coast, Norwich and the Norfolk Broads are all within easy reach by car.

The inn’s location also makes it a good base for walking and cycling breaks and there are storage facilities for bikes. The region is also excellent for fishing, all year round. With a day ticket, guests can enjoy fishing within 400 metres of the inn. There are plenty more wonderful fishing spots in the area too. Fishing and bird watching guides can be arranged.
